We all know we need to do it; but trying to improve your lifestyle can often feel daunting. It can feel like you have to make massive changes in the way you live your life. But it doesn’t have to be like that. A few small changes made to some of the things you do can have a hugely positive impact on your lifestyle as a whole. Your body may not end up being a temple, but you will feel better, happier and more energised.  In this article, I am going to explain 5 simple ways that you can improve your lifestyle. I hope some of these work for you!

Drink Plenty Of Water

Drinking enough water is important to stay healthy. And it’s official – according to the NHS you should be knocking back 6 to 8 cups a day.  But water’s boring, right? It is certainly fair to say many of us aren’t enamoured of the thought of having 6 glasses a day. However, there are ways to consume what you need without realising it. Placing a slice of lemon into your water to give it some flavour, or some sugar free dilute juice will do the job and that way you will not be able to taste the water on its own. Whatever way you choose to sneak water into your system, make sure it’s low-sugar and low-fat!

Staying hydrated has more benefits than you are probably aware of. It reduces the risk of headaches and migraines throughout the day. If you spend a lot of time peering at a computer screen, you may experience these. Water can stop these from happening. Another health benefit of drinking plenty of water each day has is helping your digestive system and treating constipation. These are just a few of the ways increasing your water intake will improve your lifestyle.

Sleep

Getting enough sleep each night is vital. It is estimated that we generally spend around one-third of our lives asleep. But in today’s stressful, 24/7 world, many of us don’t get the sleep we require. Sleep is essential for us to be able to live without suffering from exhaustion. The recommended amount of sleep per night is 7-9 hours. If you struggle to get to sleep, check out these 30 ways to help you switch off at night.

When you are well rested your productivity for the day will be significantly higher as you will have more energy. You won’t be going to work exhausted, relying on your usual morning coffees and other stimulants to get you through the day. Establishing a routine is critical – go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. If you need to get up at 7am for work or any other commitments you may have, then to get the full 9 hours sleep you should be going to bed at 10pm every night. Once your body is into a routine you will find it much easier.

Exercise

Daily exercise does your body and mind wonders. Many people have complicated relationships with the thought of exercise: some people love it and some absolutely hate it. Some have reasons why they cannot do it too. For me personally, I want to do it but I have a very troublesome and longstanding knee injury that stops me.

When you really consider the benefits that exercise has, I can guarantee you will be inclined to try harder. Exercise can reduce the risk of major illnesses such as heart disease, strokes and type 2 diabetes by up to 50%. As we all know, it’s an excellent fat burner too. As little exercise as 15 minutes a day of brisk walking will soon have you seeing the positive impact it is having on your body.

If hardcore gym exercise isn’t for you,  a great way to start the build-up to becoming more active is to follow the NHS’ couch to 5k plan. This simple 9-week exercise plan will help you to enjoy running, doing so at a steady pace. When exercising you will notice an improvement in your mood as it produces changes in the parts of the brain that regulate stress and anxiety. The human body is not designed to be a couch potato, exercise will quickly improve your lifestyle.

Lessen Stress

We live in a very stressful world, especially right now, with the very unusual circumstances that are dominating our lives. It goes without saying we need to lessen the stress in our lives, but this can be easier said than done. However, when you try to stress less over things your body will feel better altogether. Exercise is an excellent stress reliever. It will help you clear your mind and change your focus onto something positive. If you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, then taking half an hour out of your day to go for a walk or a run will be beneficial.

Taking time out is also a key way to reducing stress levels. Whether that be alone doing something you enjoy or with family and friends doing an exciting activity or even a quiet lunch in a small café. Allowing time out of your normal routine to do some things you love will undoubtedly contribute to improving your lifestyle. Even if it is just 10 minutes a day – make time for yourself.

Balanced Diet

You should be eating 3 meals a day with sensible portions, 7 days a week. What goes into the meals is the most important part. Fruit and vegetables should be a cornerstone of your diet, ensuring you consume enough of each every day to deliver all the essential stuff your body needs to function well.

Having a balanced diet has so many lifestyle improving benefits such as helping your skin and hair and boosting your mental health. What you eat plays a huge part in the condition of your skin.  If you struggle with acne, then changing your diet, cutting out sugary or fatty snacks and eating more fruit and vegetables will help clear it up. Eating a balanced diet is also a wonderful way of keeping control of your weight. Following short term weight loss plans can be effective, but long term you will you need to make lifestyle changes to maintain the right weight for you. If your weight yo-yos, it can lead to health problems. Therefore, changing what you have in your meals permanently means the weight you lose will stay off.

Final Thoughts

There are many simple ways you can improve your lifestyle. We’re all different but with a little effort and planning, we can all take small and easy steps that will make us more energised, happier and healthier. Not all of the above methods may work for you, but hopefully, it will get you thinking and trying out new methods and strategies. I hope amongst these you find something that impacts your life in a positive way. Good luck!
