Why Small Businesses Need A Marketing Agency

In a marketing career that has spanned over 15 years, I have worked with many businesses in the early stages of growth.  I’ve worked for startup businesses with only a handful of employees doing everything. I’ve worked for SME’s where my role was only *slightly* more defined.  And I’ve been lucky enough to have had access to some great marketing minds. I’ve also learned from many mistakes – and successes – along the way. There’s no magic solution, and no one right way to succeed.  You know your business better than anyone.  But – there are strategies you can put into place to help make your journey more fruitful and to save you from burnout, leaving you to really enjoy your entrepreneurial journey.  One thing I have learned is that small businesses need a marketing agency. Here’s why!

Time Is Money

In a recent survey published by The Drum, it was discovered that 50% of small business owners said that they did all of their own marketing. And they spend an average of 20 hours a week doing it.   But in the land of the entrepreneur and small business owner, 20 hours is a long time. These are hours which, most of the time, could be put to better use elsewhere.  74% of the survey respondents agreed. They’d rather focus on ‘primary business responsibilities’, such as spending time with customers and helping staff exceed expectations.

The same survey by The Drum found that 93% of SMBs (small to medium businesses) who hired an internal marketer said they’d probably still engage an external agency. 67% who hired an internal marketer wish they’d just hired an agency instead.

What is this telling us?  That those who have been in your position before would encourage you to work with a marketing agency.  Why?  Many entrepreneurs wear ‘marketing hats’ because they understand the importance of marketing to their business. But, it’s not their hat of choice.  And nor should it have to be.

Knowledge Is Power

There’s no doubt that making mistakes and learning are part of the journey.  However, some mistakes can be costly and make or break a business.  It’s estimated that 20% of businesses will fail in their first year (rising to 30% in the second year and 50% by year five). And the reasons vary – from not having the right team, to being outcompeted, to failing to tap into the right sector of the market for their product.

We by no means want to be the harbingers of doom! But what the statistics tell us is that if you want a chance to be in the 50% of businesses who go on to be successful, you’d be wise to tap into the knowledge of those who have been there, done it and not merely survived, but thrived.  Marketing is one of the most important pillars of any business. But how do you know what to focus on?  What parts of marketing do you spend your time on?  How do you build an effective marketing strategy for your field that will go the distance and get your desired results?

That’s where working with a marketing agency comes in.

Work To Live, Don’t Live To Work

Just like you’re building a business around your passions and interests, so are marketing agencies doing the same.  They love what they do; they live and breathe their trade, and they’ve been doing it for a long time.  They’re good at it, they understand it and they know how to achieve results.  Your business is your baby; who better to leave it with than those who will care for it, nourish it, and build it up in the right ways? A key reason why small businesses need a marketing agency!

Two Heads Are Better Than One

Modern marketing is a multi-functional, fast-paced entity that spreads across multiple dynamic platforms.  The landscape is constantly changing.  Navigating it as a small business owner can be overwhelming, exhausting and demoralising. Just ask anyone who uses Facebook Business Manager who doesn’t really know how to use Facebook Business Manager!  But it doesn’t have to be this way.

According to The Drum, although only 11% of the SMB owners they surveyed currently work with a marketing agency, 45% of DIY marketers say they’re likely to hire one in the future.

We have a vested interest in this; we’re a marketing agency who love what we do, and we think you should work with us.  But don’t just take our word for it; your peers are giving you advice.  This is your chance to get ahead of the curve and take back some of your time, freeing you up to focus on your core business needs.

Fortune Favours The Bold

Exciting things are born out of taking that first step of faith.  Now that you can see why small businesses need a marketing agency, take the leap.  One piece of advice to leave you with is to do your research. Know who you are talking to and feel comfortable knowing their values align with yours.
