We live in an era where the success of a small business hinges on its online visibility and credibility. These days, your website is your shop window. And like all shop windows, no matter how good it looks, if it can’t be seen, then chances are your customers will be shopping elsewhere. This is where Domain Authority (DA) comes into play. Understanding and improving a website’s domain authority is essential for small businesses looking to thrive in the hyper-competitive online marketplace. Here’s the lowdown.

Understanding Domain Authority

Domain authority is a score originally devised and developed by software company Moz. The measure predicts how likely a website is to rank well on search engine pages (SERPS) such as those provided by the likes of Google and Bing. Scores range from 1 to 100, and the higher the score, the greater the likelihood of being able to rank highly. Domain authority is calculated via an evaluation of numerous factors, but the most important are the number and quality of backlinks your site has. For the uninitiated, backlinks are incoming links from another website to yours. Backlinks from strong and relevant sites act as endorsements. It’s a vote of confidence that signals to search engines that your site is credible and relevant. And be in no doubt – search engines love that!

What’s a Good Domain Authority Score?

A “good” score can vary according to the industry the site operates in, but as a general rule of thumb:

DA 1-20: new sites with few links from other sites. Most likely to struggle to rank well for competitive keywords.

DA 21-50: growing sites with good link profiles and authority in their industry niche. These sites will really be beginning to gain traction in their SEO efforts and will be ranking for many keywords.

DA 51-70: websites in this bracket have strong authority and link profiles, ranking well for highly competitive keywords.

DA 71 and above: high authority, powerful websites. Think established companies and well-known news outlets. Anything above 90, you’re looking at the elite – Google, Facebook and Amazon!

Whatever your score, there’s always room for improvement. And you can’t rest on your laurels either, as scores can quickly plummet should you lose any backlinks. This happens all the time!

Why It Matters

Firstly, the higher your domain authority score, the more likely your site is to appear towards the top of search results. Ultimately, this means more organic traffic to your site, more leads, more interest and more sales! Domain authority’s also great for building your credibility and authority in your niche, attracting more business and reinforcing trust. With a good DA score, you’ll attract more quality backlinks from other sites, which over time increases your domain authority even further. And finally, an improving score is indicative of the right SEO strategies being employed, so it’s a good benchmark of your SEO efforts.

Strategies To Improve Domain Authority

Ok, so now you know what DA is, and why it’s so important for your website. But how do you go about improving it? Here are some effective strategies to enhance your score:

Create Content

Content is the cornerstone of strong DA. A website left to its own devices isn’t going anywhere except downwards when it comes to search results. Create and curate engaging, relevant and quality content that addresses your audience’s needs and interests. This will naturally attract more visitors and crucially, if your audience finds your stuff valuable, then Google will too. Treat Google and search engines as if they were your customers and you’ll be on the track to domain authority success. Other sites will then gravitate towards your content and link to it.

On-Page SEO

No-one buys anything from a disorganised, messy old shop window. It’s the same for websites! Make sure all the basic on-page SEO ducks are in a row for your content. Title tags, headers, meta descriptions and copyright-free imagery are a must. Using relevant keywords in your content is very important, so don’t write any content without finding some. There are some great free keyword tools out there – AHrefs Keyword Generator comes highly recommended.

Improve Your Internal Linking

Think of your site as a living, breathing web. With a robust internal linking structure, search engine bots find it easy to crawl and index your content, this will also help to distribute domain authority through your site. Make sure your pages link to other relevant pages. Using organic anchor text to embed links on blogs to seamlessly link to other pages on your site is a very neat way of joining everything up in a way that both Google and human eyeballs will appreciate.

Backlinks Outreach

As mentioned, getting backlinks from strong and authoritative websites will positively impact your DA. Creating content on your site is one way of attracting links, another way is by outreach. If you’re writing a blog and you mention a service or product positively, contact the company or person involved, and ask them to link back to your blog on their website! Approaching local news media organisations with newsworthy business stories is another good way of building authoritative backlinks.

Guest Posting and Link Placement

Guest posting, where you write and publish blogs on other sites, which include a link back to your own site also does the job fantastically well.  Many sites accept these posts and are actively looking for contributors. You can also look to place a simple link to your site on existing content on other sites. Guest posting and link placement is great for both parties – you get a link to your site from theirs and the publisher gets content or a link their own readers will find relevant and interesting. Here at Muve we can place articles and links on thousands of sites across the globe – contact us for more details on how you can get your DA moving in the right direction with backlinks outreach.

Domain Authority – Quality Over Quantity

When it comes to backlinks, always focus on acquiring backlinks from high-authority sites in your niche. One high-quality backlink can be more beneficial than multiple low-quality ones.

Monitor Your Progress

Regularly track your domain authority score (at least twice a month) to see how your efforts are working. There are various tools out there to help, and the best ones (with the most data and reporting) are paid for. However, you’ll find some great basic information for free with The Hoth’s Domain Authority Checker tool. You can also have a look at competitor sites too! But remember – improving your DA is a gradual process that requires consistency, patience and a long-term approach. But using the above strategies over time will see your domain authority grow and the stronger your score gets, the easier is it to maintain and grow even more!
