With 24-hour rolling news reports warning of shrinking economies, spiralling inflation, social strife and wars, it is easy to find yourself existing in a constant state of stress and anxiety. But despite living in uncertain times, with positive thinking, it is possible to not only cope, but thrive. The way we look at the world and allow ourselves to think has a profound impact on our emotions, how we act and our well-being. By focusing on constructive thoughts, maintaining an optimistic outlook and believing in the potential for good outcomes, we can completely transform our lives for the better. In this article, we take a deep delve into the benefits that positive thinking can bring, from improved health and better relationships to perhaps even better luck!

Boosted Mental Health

Positive thinking is a cornerstone of our mental health and emotional wellbeing. By always focusing on the positive aspects of any situation, we can help strip out toxic emotions such as fear and anxiety. When we move away from negative thoughts and worries, our stress level drops dramatically. This allows us the brain space to think clearly and reframe our perceptions, which reduces feelings of helplessness and despair. Make no mistake, we’re not talking about denying negative emotions or experiences. Rather, it’s about creating a healthy perspective that acknowledges problems while focusing on positive aspects of life.

Resilience

No matter who we are, each one of us will face challenges and setbacks in our lives. How we cope with adversity ultimately defines how we deal it. Positive thinking creates resilience – the ability to bounce back from adversity. When we maintain an optimistic outlook, we see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than things we simply will never overcome or recover from. With positive thinking, we approach adversity with a problem-solving mindset. And even when solutions don’t readily present themselves, we’re in a better place to think about alternatives.

Improved Self-Esteem

While positive thinking builds coping mechanisms in challenging situations, it also builds long term self-confidence. When we recognise our capabilities and strengths, our self-image becomes more positive, and our feelings of self-worth take root and grow. When we believe in ourselves, that’s when we start to take life by the scruff of the neck and chase personal goals with conviction.

Better Relationships

The way we think, and act, has a direct effect not only on ourselves but those around us. When we undertake personal interactions with positive thinking, we automatically throw out feelings of warmth, kindness and empathy. The atmosphere becomes harmonious, we create connections and bonds whilst fostering trust. Our work and life relationships become happier, deeper and more meaningful. When we exude negativity, we become a ‘mood hoover’, sucking the air and life out of a room. On the other hand, positivity is contagious!

Physical Health Benefits

Our minds are intricately linked to our bodies, and as we learn more about the structure of our minds, the ever deeper the links seem to become. It’s clear that our thoughts directly influence our physical wellbeing. Positive thinking stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural mood enhancers, leading to a more positive outlook on life. Meanwhile, many studies have revealed that positive-minded people have stronger immune systems and a reduced risk of developing chronic illnesses like heart disease and strokes

Thinking positively also means that individuals are more likely to sleep better, exercise more and eat healthily too. Turns out a healthy mind really does mean a healthy body.

Does Positive Thinking Make You More Lucky?

Certainly, many people believe that you make your own luck! But while positive thinking can’t help you manipulate chance or change things that are out of your control, it does affect the perception of luck, and the opportunities “lucky” people seem to get. Think about it this way – when we have a positive mindset, we exude optimism and confidence. That automatically makes us more visible and more appealing in both our jobs and our personal lives. This can work like a magnet. People are drawn to us, doors open, and opportunities arise. We also become more proactive, quickly identifying and pursuing chances to win. What many would perceive as luck is actually simply down to having an optimistic outlook and acting on that positivity.

Final Thoughts

Positive thinking is all about cultivating happiness and fostering a sense of self-worth and achievement. While many of us remind ourselves of the need to think positively when adversity comes, very few of us embrace the idea fully and make it part of our continuous lives. When we focus on the good things, we’re able to deal with the bad more easily. When negativity is eliminated, we live our lives in the moment, appreciating life’s joys and the journey rather than always fixating on the destination and what could go wrong.
